990 Rebuild Part "No Idea"

So, the last update, I had gotten the bike back together enough to test start it and surprise, surprise...it worked! Well, to say I was relieved would be an understatement, but I still wasn't done. After running the bike for several minutes, I shut it down and put it in the garage with some cardboard under it to check for leaks. The next morning, I noticed a couple. First, the shift shaft seal was leaking. That isn't a big deal, all bikes need that replaced from time to time and Clay had mentioned that he had never done it, so I added that to my last parts list. Then, I noticed that the oil filter cover was leaking as well. I am guessing that I either forgot to hit it with some oil to pre lube it or had pinched the seal when I installed it. Again, no biggie, I have extras of those, so I can replace it easily enough. Anyhow, I decided to hold off on those and install the body work and then the graphics kit. Good enough, I started by reinstalling the second fuel tank and the side panels, both from and rear.

Of course I used the new bolts I had gotten to fix the tank to the frame.

Of course, I remembered to reinstall the crossover hose that feeds the left tank from the right.

The tank bolts got a coating of grease

Then, before installing the back half of the bike, I adjusted the chain and torqued the rear axle nut

Good thing I got those graphics, these panels look a bit beat...LOL

Then it was time for the wind screen

It's starting to look like a bike again. All the panels installed, so it is time for the graphics.

The decals were sticky as hell and I was warned that once they are placed, it is near impossible to get them back up again. Boy, that was the truth. Although I did my best, I wasn't perfect by a long shot. After a couple of hours of steady work, I had them all on and the bike looked well enough

After that, I did something called a 15 minute idle. It is supposed to reset the computer that controls the throttle bodies. While the bike was running, I busied myself with installing the luggage racks.

I was as pleased as can be, but then right in the middle of happiness there was a cloud. I saw a large puff of oil smoke coming from the right side of the bike. When I investigated it, I saw that the oil return line was dribbling oil down onto the front exhaust pipe. I tried playing with it to get it to seal, but it only got worse. I was pretty upset. I had considered replacing it as part of the service when I disassembled the bike, but had declined since I needed to remove the right side engine support. Well now, my laziness has come home to roost I suppose. Once the bike was put away, I made a rather substantial parts order that included shift seals, oil seals and oil hoses. Thanks to that laziness, I will have to re-disassemble a fair amount of the bike in order to get to that line. At least I am something of an expert at it. Well, I suppose I am to blame, so just desserts I suppose. At least I know the bike runs well other than the various oil leaks.

Anyhow, at least another week before I get the parts and then get back to installing them.
